Applied research notice
Dear Members,
As you are aware our Nepali Summer School is going to start from June 15th (Saturday, 2:00 – 4:00 pm) at the Congregation Beth Israel hall in West Hartford. This class is open to anyone age 7 to 13 years who want to learn basic Nepali language and know more about Nepal and Nepali culture.
At the same time, it is our pleasure to inform you that a special class is being held at the same time and location targeted for high school and college students. Dr. Gandhi R Bhattarai, one of NAConn’s life members has graciously offering “Applied Research and Statistical Methods for Beginners” class. Students at grade 11 through early college will learn about scientific research methods, basic statistical analysis and writing research report. A draft course syllabus is attached with this email.
The tuition fee for this class is $200 per student for NAConn members. Non-member fee is $300. Children of NAConn member who are under 18 will pay member fee. Entire tuition fee will be recognized as NAConn’s income resulting from Dr. Bhattarai’s individual sponsorship to NAConn’s educational project. Students will be enrolled on first come first service basis. There is no pre-requisite for this class, however, those who have taken Algebra II and Biology I/II will benefit most. Students entering grade 9 and 10 will be accepted if they have minimum GPA of 3.75 or taken SAT (>=1600).

Credentials of the instructor:
Dr. Bhattarai is NAConn’s life member and is currently serving as NAConn’s Chief Advisor (expiring on June 30, 2013). In the past two years, he has been the major force behind many initiatives of NAConn including coordinating and advising NAConn’s blood donation program, curriculum development and advising for Nepali language school, first Editor-in-Chief of Connecticut Chautari – NAConn’s newsletter, active member of bylaws revision committee and many other institutional development activities. In his professional life, he works as Director of Healthcare Economics in the Healthcare Analytics department at OptumHealth. He has published several peer-reviewed journal articles and presented research papers in many professional forums. He received his PhD in Applied Economics from Auburn University in 2006.
Dr. Bhattarai’s teaching credentials include Visiting Professor of Economics at the School of Business, Auburn University Montgomery, AL, Online Adjunct Faculty at Baker College, MI, Instructor of Economics at Department of Economics at Auburn University, AL and Lecturer of Agricultural Economics at the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, Nepal. He has taught several undergraduate and graduate courses in principles of economics, international trade, agricultural economics and survey research methods.
